Our requirements

What we look for in our Nannies

01

3-5+ yrs experience

We register nannies who have a minimum of 3 years experience working as a nanny, governess or mentor within a Private Household. Should your experience differ please get in touch as we may also be searcing for a hybrid role that may suit your skillset. Before you upload your CV please ensure that your experience is made clear with the exact date (month / year) the location, hours worked and ages of the children, then a brief synopsis of your duties involved in the role. This will ensure that we understand your work history and experience when looking at your application.

02

Childcare & teaching qualifications

Many families are looking to hire a nanny who has studied Early Years education either at Diploma or Degree level. Popular courses are the full time 2-year CACHE Diploma in Childcare and Education or a 3 year BA Early Years / Early Childhood studies. These courses will give you the foundations to understanding the holistic developmental needs of children, including child development, but also theoretical studies to development such as Piaget, Steiner, Montessori, Vygotsky, and Bronfenbrenner etc, all of whom have underpinning knowledge to child development. Many Governesses have a Degree, PGCE and teaching experience. It is not essential for all families to want to hire a qualified nanny. Many families also appreciate on the job experience is also valuable training.

03

Ability & Skills

Previous experience is very important when we are selecting nannies for families. Nannies need to be able to demonstrate their ability to care for and promote the learning and development for the children of the role they are applyng for. We also take into account transferable skills such as Teachers taking on the role of a Governess. A Governess will have to have previous household experience to transition into this role. Other skills a nanny may have are sports, languages & music.

04

Legal Requirements

We require all of our nannies to have an Enhanced DBS check. These checks are processed by the Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) and will show spent and unspent convictions and cautions as held on the Police National Computer. Should you not have a recent DBS check we are able to process one for you.

We recommend that all of our UK nannies take out Public Liability Insurance (recognised by Ofsted preferred), and a paediatric 1st aid course for yours and your families piece of mind.

Please be aware that Mayfair Nannies make no financial gain from the DBS check or liability insurance.

05

References

Many families provide their nannies with written references to describe the care of their children and quality of their duties. Mayfair Nannies will also verify these references by calling the families directly. We aim to take at least the past 3 recent references for our file. However should a nanny be in her last positions for short periods we would need to take further references. We never take a reference from the nannies current employer should they still be employed.

Roles

What role are you looking for?

We dont just register nannies. We have an extensive variety of childcare professionals at our fingertips to suit all households!

Maternity Nurse

A Maternity nurse is booked many weeks before the birth to assist families with their new-born. They can take on a varied role ensuring that parents receive the best support and knowledge as possible. Many join a family from a few days up to around 12 weeks, and some families retain their maternity nurse for even longer depending on the babies needs and parents’ wishes. They may work 24 hours per day 6 days per week with a 4-hour break in either the morning or the afternoon. Breaks are negotiable for the family depending on the need for cover, e.g., if there is a school run in the afternoon it would be easier for the nurse to take her break in the morning. Some Maternity nurses are booked just for waking nights to ensure the family get a restful night’s sleep and baby is well looked after. Breastfeeding mums will be woken for feeds, or some families successfully express. Through many years of 1st hand experience Maternity Nurses are an invaluable wealth of knowledge to support breast and bottle feeding, medical concerns, sleep training and general support for new mums and parents.

Nanny & Manny

A nanny will care for children from birth to 8 years of age. Usually they would have a recognised level 3 childcare qualification and would generally not have teaching experience (see Governor & Governess), unqualified nannies will have gained their knowledge through 1st had experience caring for children. Nannies will carry out 'Nursery duties' depending on your requirements. Nursery duties include planning and preparing nutritious meals for the children (rarely will a nanny cook or the whole family). Weekly food shopping, laundry and ironing, cleaning the children's play areas and toys of under 1's, and planning and implementing age and stage related activities. The main role of a nanny is caring for the children. Nannies will not deep clean the family home e.g. vacuuming, dusting, cleaning bathrooms, family laundry etc. We would advise families to have a cleaner or housekeeper for such tasks.

Governor & Governesses

Governors & Governesses primarily focus on children's educational development, language development or are experts in supporting children with additional needs. They work with the school to identify specific areas of development, or through their own observations create their own lesson plans to support children. Many are qualified teachers and hold other relevant qualifications such as; Teaching English as a foreign or second language (TEFL / TESL). Governors/Governess salaries vary depending on their experience. Where nannies generally care for children throughout the Early Years, Governors and Governesses focus on children and young adults from 5 to 16 years of age. This may be a solution for you if you are looking to boost academic performance in a certain subject or require someone who can focus on the holistic development of children with an academic background.

Chaperones, Tutors & Mentors

Many families with busy lifestyles require a special kind of candidate. We have registered chaperones, tutor and mentors for older children and young people who are not in need of a nanny. Chaperones and mentors are generally employed for single parents and/or families with challenging work commitments. A live in or daily tutor may be employed to focus on a specific area of study, a whole curriculum or to develop a second language.

Temporary Nannies

From time to time we may have temporary short term or holiday temporary positions Please note that we do not have a register of bank staff seeking temporary employment and we do not register candidates who are only looking for a temporary role. This is due to the time it takes us to fully register a candidate, many times a temporary placement can be filled quickly with a registered candidate who is fully vetted and ready to go.
