We’ll discuss your location preferences, salary expectations, interests and the elements of a role that matter most to you. This allows us to make considered introductions to families whose requirements, values and lifestyle align with your own.

What we look for in our Nannies

Minimum 3 years’ professional experience

We generally register candidates with a minimum of three years’ professional experience as a nanny, governess, governor, mentor or other relevant childcare professional within a private household.

If your experience differs but you have relevant transferable skills, please do get in touch, as we occasionally recruit for hybrid and specialist roles.

Before submitting your CV, please ensure your employment history includes the month and year, location, working hours, ages of the children and a brief overview of your responsibilities for each position.

Childcare & Teaching Qualifications

Many families prefer candidates who hold recognised childcare or education qualifications, such as a CACHE Level 3 Diploma, Early Years degree, teaching qualification or PGCE.

Qualifications provide a strong foundation in child development, education and safeguarding; however, significant professional experience is also highly valued. Not every role requires a formal childcare qualification, and requirements will vary depending on the family and position.

Experience & Skills

Professional experience is an important part of our selection process. Candidates should be able to demonstrate their ability to provide high-quality care while supporting each child’s development, wellbeing and individual needs.

We also value additional skills such as teaching experience, languages, sports, music, special educational needs experience and other specialist expertise relevant to a particular household.

Vetting & Professional Requirements

All candidates introduced by Mayfair Nannies are required to undergo appropriate vetting, including an Enhanced DBS check for UK-based roles, verified references and identity checks. Disclosure and Barring Service

Where a candidate does not hold a suitable current DBS certificate, we may be able to arrange one on their behalf.

For UK nanny positions, we also strongly recommend appropriate paediatric first aid training and public liability insurance where relevant to the role.

Mayfair Nannies does not make a financial gain from DBS applications or insurance arrangements.

References

We verify candidates’ professional references directly with previous employers and aim to obtain references covering their most recent relevant positions.

Where a candidate has held several short-term roles, additional references may be required to establish a fuller employment history.

We will not contact a candidate’s current employer without their knowledge and permission.

What type of role are you looking for?

Mayfair Nannies represents a wide range of experienced childcare professionals, from career nannies and maternity nurses to governesses, governors, tutors and mentors.

Maternity Practitioner

A Maternity Practitioner, traditionally known as a Maternity Nurse, provides specialist non-medical support to families during the newborn period. They are often booked several weeks before the birth and can play a varied role, helping parents feel supported, informed and confident during the first weeks and months with their baby.

Many Maternity Practitioners join a family shortly after the birth and remain for around 6–12 weeks, although some families retain their support for longer depending on the baby’s needs and the parents’ wishes.

Working patterns vary depending on the family. Some Maternity Practitioners work 24-hour cover, commonly six days per week with an agreed daily break, while others are booked for daytime support or waking nights only. Breaks are usually arranged around the family’s routine and the level of cover required.

For overnight support, breastfeeding mothers will usually be woken for feeds, while some families may choose to express milk so that the Maternity Practitioner can assist with certain feeds.

With extensive hands-on newborn experience, Maternity Practitioners can provide valuable support with breast and bottle feeding, newborn care, settling, sleep routines and general parental guidance. They can also recognise when further advice from a midwife, health visitor, GP or other healthcare professional may be appropriate.

Their role is practical, supportive and reassuring, helping families navigate the newborn stage with greater confidence and continuity of care.

Nanny

A nanny provides professional, hands-on care for children within a private household, from babies and toddlers through to school-age children. Many nannies hold a recognised Level 3 childcare qualification, while others have developed their expertise through extensive practical experience caring for children.

The nanny’s primary responsibility is the care, wellbeing and development of the children. Depending on the family’s requirements, this will usually include age-appropriate nursery duties, such as:

  • Planning and preparing nutritious meals for the children
  • Shopping for the children’s food and essentials
  • Children’s laundry and ironing
  • Keeping children’s bedrooms, play areas, toys and equipment clean and organised
  • Planning and arranging age-appropriate activities, outings and classes
  • Supporting developmental milestones, learning and routines
  • School or nursery runs where required

A nanny would not usually be expected to undertake general household cleaning, family laundry, bathrooms, vacuuming or other housekeeping duties unrelated to the children. Where a family requires wider household support, we would recommend employing a housekeeper or cleaner alongside the nanny.

Governor & Governesses

A Governor or Governess primarily focuses on a child’s educational, academic and personal development, often working with school-age children and teenagers.

Many are qualified teachers or hold additional specialist qualifications, such as TEFL or TESOL, and may have experience supporting children with language development, specific academic subjects or additional educational needs.

They will often work closely with a child’s school to identify areas where further support may be beneficial, while also using their own observations to plan structured learning, educational activities and development goals.

Where a nanny’s role is generally centred around day-to-day childcare and nursery duties, a Governor or Governess has a stronger educational focus. They may support with homework, exam preparation, language learning, organisation, confidence and broader personal development.

These roles are particularly suited to families looking to strengthen a child’s academic performance, provide additional educational structure or support the child’s overall development alongside their schooling.

Salaries vary considerably depending on the candidate’s qualifications, experience, specialist skills and the requirements of the role.

Chaperones, Tutors & Mentors

Some families require a more specialist form of support for older children and young people who no longer need a traditional nanny.

Chaperones and mentors can provide practical day-to-day support, structure and guidance, particularly for busy households, single-parent families or families with demanding work and travel commitments. Depending on the role, they may assist with school routines, appointments, activities, travel, organisation and general supervision.

Tutors may be employed on a live-in or daily basis to focus on a particular subject, support a wider curriculum, assist with exam preparation or develop a second language.

These roles are highly individual and can be tailored around the child’s age, personality, academic needs and the family’s lifestyle.

From time to time, Mayfair Nannies may assist with short-term, temporary and holiday positions.

As our primary focus is permanent and long-term placements, we do not maintain a dedicated pool of temporary nannies and therefore cannot always guarantee that we will have a suitable candidate available for short-notice or temporary bookings.

Where we do have a fully registered and vetted candidate available who is suitable for the role, we are happy to consider temporary opportunities.
