Rainy skies, muddy puddles and a little imagination – there's plenty of fun to be had, whatever the weather.
Autumn in Britain often brings grey skies, blustery winds and plenty of rain. While it can be tempting to stay indoors, wet weather offers wonderful opportunities for children to explore, discover and enjoy the changing seasons.
With a good pair of wellies, waterproof clothing and a little creativity, even the rainiest day can become an adventure. And when everyone is ready to warm up, there are plenty of engaging activities to continue the fun indoors.
Embrace the Rain: Outdoor Activities
1. Go on a puddle-jumping adventure
There's something irresistible about a muddy puddle! Wrap up warm, pull on waterproofs and head outside to find the biggest puddles. Younger children will love splashing, while older children can experiment with how different movements create bigger or smaller splashes.

2. Create an autumn nature collection
Take a walk through the garden, local park or woodland and collect fallen leaves, pinecones, twigs and conkers. Encourage children to notice different colours, shapes and textures. These natural treasures can be brought home for creative activities later.
3. Discover the sounds of the weather
Rainy and windy days provide a wonderful sensory experience. Stop and listen to raindrops falling onto leaves, the rustling of trees or the wind whistling through branches. Ask children what they can hear and how the weather feels against their cheeks.
4. Go on a rainy-day scavenger hunt
Make a little list of things to discover outdoors:
- A yellow or orange leaf
- A puddle with a reflection
- A wriggly worm
- A feather
- Something that moves in the wind
- Three different types of leaves
For younger children, use pictures rather than words to make the hunt more accessible.
5. Explore where the rain goes
Watch rainwater trickle along pathways, drip from leaves and collect in puddles. Older children might enjoy making little boats from fallen leaves and seeing how they float in shallow, still water.
Always choose sheltered areas and avoid outdoor activities during strong winds, thunderstorms or severe weather warnings. Keep children away from fallen branches, floodwater and fast-flowing water.
Back in the Warm: Cosy Indoor Activities
Once the wellies are off and everyone has changed into dry clothes, the adventure doesn't have to end.
1. Turn your nature collection into artwork
Spread out the leaves and natural treasures collected during your walk. Create leaf rubbings with crayons, make autumn collages or use leaves as printing stamps with washable paint.
This is a lovely way to revisit the morning's discoveries while developing creativity and fine motor skills.
2. Bake something delicious together
Rainy afternoons are perfect for baking. Apple crumble, banana muffins or simple biscuits are all wonderful choices.
Younger children can help pour and mix ingredients, while older children can practise weighing, measuring and following instructions.
And, of course, there's the added enjoyment of eating something homemade afterwards!
3. Build the ultimate cosy reading den
Gather cushions, blankets and favourite books to create a comfortable little reading corner. Add a soft lamp or fairy lights and enjoy storytime together.
Encourage children to choose their books, turn the pages and talk about their favourite characters. Older children might enjoy inventing their own stories inspired by the day's adventures.

4. Make homemade playdough
Making playdough together is almost as enjoyable as playing with it. Add autumnal colours, child-safe scents or different textures to create a seasonal sensory experience.
Children can roll, squash, pinch and shape their creations, strengthening the small muscles in their hands while using their imagination.
5. Set up an indoor obstacle course
For children who still have plenty of energy, create a simple obstacle course using cushions, tunnels and masking-tape pathways.
Encourage crawling, balancing, stepping and jumping in a safe, age-appropriate space. It's a wonderful way to support physical development when outdoor playtime has been cut short.
6. Enjoy a little quiet time
Not every moment needs to be filled with activities. After a busy morning outdoors, children may appreciate a slower afternoon with drawing, puzzles, construction toys or simply listening to music.
Giving children the opportunity to choose their own activities supports independence, confidence and imaginative play.
Making the Most of Every Season
At Mayfair Nannies, we believe that some of childhood's loveliest memories are made through simple, everyday experiences.
Jumping in puddles, collecting autumn leaves, baking together and curling up with a favourite story can be just as rewarding as a carefully planned day out.
A little rain needn't spoil the day. Sometimes, it's what makes the adventure.
